What's happening?
- The water is a grid of tiny squares. Each one gets pulled towards its neighbours. That simple rule makes waves.
- Blue is a crest (water up). Pink is a trough (water down).
- Where two crests meet, they add up to a bigger wave. Where a crest meets a trough, they cancel out. That's called interference.
- A wave squeezing through a gap spreads out on the other side. That's diffraction.
- Light is a wave too. Shine it through two thin slits and you get bright and dark stripes on a screen, just like here. The strip on the right edge shows how bright each spot would be.
Try this: load the Double slit and slide the frequency up. Do the stripes get closer together or further apart? Now block one slit with a wall. What happens to the stripes?
